5 Mix-Ins to Boost Your Coffee
1. Grass-Fed Buttermilk/MCT Oil
While many use these mix-ins to stay feeling full with less carbs, there are other bonuses to these healthy fats. Grass-fed butter contains betacarotene and omega-3 fatty acids, which are also great anti-inflammatory agents. And coconut or MCT oil has been shown in studies to potentially increase good cholesterol.
2. Fiber Supplements
Fiber supplements can be naturally extracted or lab produced. Lignin, cellulose, pectin, gum and psyllium are all natural forms. In fact, psyllium is the only supplemental fiber shown to help lower “bad” cholesterol. Common manufactured fibers include polydextrose, polyols and maltodextrins. But be cautious — too much fiber too quickly can cause bloating, cramping and gas.
3. Cardamom
This ancient spice is known to enhance both sweet and savory dishes…and tea! Cardamom is actually rich in compounds that help fight inflammation and protect cells from damage. It’s also a diuretic, which can help your body get rid of water buildup.
4. Powdered Mushroom Blend
With mushroom powder, it all depends on the blend. For those looking to alleviate anxiety, reishi mushrooms feature a calming compound, triterpene, that may do the trick. Cordyceps can help your body utilize oxygen more efficiently, enhancing blood flow for a morning energy boost. And a little lion’s mane could help with mental clarity. It actually encourages the production of a bioprotein called the nerve growth factor, as well as myelin, which is insulation around nerve fibers.
5. Collagen Powder/Peptides
Collagen is actually the most abundant form of protein in the human body and helps support a variety of functions. In supplement or powdered form, you’ll notice it’s been hydrolyzed — meaning it’s easier for your body to digest. Collagen plays a major role in supporting skin elasticity and hydration. It’s also been shown to help improve muscle mass and prevent bone loss, which may help with joint pain and osteoporosis.
How to Clean Your Coffee Machine
When’s the last time you cleaned your coffee machine? Turns out, it needs to be cleaned more often than you think. It’s suggested to do a deep clean once every 3–6 months, to guarantee that whichever device you trust stays in tip-top shape.
When it’s cleaning time, add equal parts water and white distilled vinegar to the reservoir and start a brew cycle. Let it cycle through and when done, flush through again with water. Ta-da, you now have a healthy and functional machine.
Some devices have specific cleaning instructions, but if not, this method works for reusable pod machines, the classic coffee pot and espresso machines. The vinegar helps deep clean that buildup and keep your machine running like new.
Give New Life to Old Grounds
Fertilize with Coffee Grounds
You can put grounds in the ground! Used coffee grounds are perfect for that flower or garden bed. A natural fertilizer, they add useful organic nutrients to soil.
Recycle Coffee Pods
Some manufacturers offer a free recycling program for intact pods. If not, remove the aluminum cap, empty the coffee grounds, then recycle the plastic casing with peace of mind.
Compost Coffee Filters
Instead of piling up in the trash, these flimsy filters make a great carbon-rich addition to compost.
