Gluten-free Snack Satisfaction
Going gluten-free can certainly mean a big shift to your eating habits. The good news is that you can still enjoy satisfying snacking on a gluten-free diet. Try these tips to make going gluten-free snacking easy and delicious.
Do a Snack Swap
Start with finding gluten-free versions of your favorite snacks. Many popular snacks like pretzels and crackers contain gluten, while others like popcorn are naturally gluten-free. Look for the words “gluten-free” in the product name or on the packaging to know it’s a safe choice.
Consider online grocery ordering or research before you go shopping to see if some of your favorites are available in gluten-free varieties. As gluten-free products are often made with alternative flour options, you may even find you like their crisp texture more than that of the wheat-based classics.
Dip and Dunk
Just because you’re going gluten-free doesn’t mean you have to skip the dip. Many gluten-free dips are available. Try carrots or celery with your favorite yogurt-based tzatziki or apples with almond butter. If you’re wanting more of the craveable crunch you’re used to, try some gluten-free tortilla chips with guacamole or gluten-free pretzels with hummus. As always, make sure you check your labels.
Salty and Sweet
Another great gluten-free snack idea is putting together something salty and sweet. Apples and cheese are a classic combo. If you’re staying on the go, a simple trail mix with sweet, dried fruit and salty nuts is a great option. Or for something a bit more indulgent, you could mix gluten-free pretzels or popcorn with chocolate.
Gluten-free on the Go
While it may be more challenging staying gluten-free when you’re out and about, with some careful planning you can still be stocked with snacks. Stay prepared with shelf-stable options that you can pack in a bag or container in the car. While fresh fruits and veggies are great, having a dry snack on hand can help in a pinch. Keep individual packages of your favorite gluten-free finds on hand and you’ll always have an option that works for you.
Serve and Share
Just because you’re gluten-free doesn’t mean you can’t share snacks with those you love. When planning a get-together, it’s a nice touch to include a gluten-free option in case other guests have gluten-free preferences themselves. You’ll probably find that even gluten eaters will enjoy the gluten-free snack options.
To host gluten-free, continue to use your favorite swaps with larger-size portions of dips. In addition, you can add crowd-pleasing, protein-based snacks like chicken wings or sliced meat platters. Remember to check the labels first, even on lunch meat and wings, as gluten may be in sauces or seasoning. It’s a nice gesture to share the gluten-free label with guests so they can trust every bite too.
For a fancier event, try elevating gluten-free snacking by building hors d'oeuvres. Have a gluten-free snack as a base and top with great flavors. Salty, gluten-free pretzels make a great base for creamy brie and tart fruit preserves. Crisp gluten-free crackers get great herby flavor with pesto and fresh mozzarella. You can even try an artful gluten-free nacho with a small spoonful of sour cream and pico de gallo. Not only will all these bites be sure to satisfy, they’ll also be beautiful.
