4 Tips for Healthy Fall Festivities

As fall approaches, it’s time to start preparing for the outdoor activities that come with it. Whether it’s a trip to the apple orchard or a bonfire in the backyard, most events feature classic, comforting food choices that may not always be viewed as the most nutritious. Here are some tips and tricks to help you create a healthy and enjoyable outside event.

1. Smart Snacking

Serve up some appetizing snacks that are delicious and simple to make, without sacrificing flavor. Unsure of what that looks like? Consider some seasoned air-popped popcorn, prepare a 5-ingredient guacamole for a quick flavor-packed dip, or try out this whole-grain roasted vegetable pasta salad for a fiber-filled dish. These snacks and side dishes will be a hit and provide high-quality options for everyone.

2. Rethink Your Drink

If you choose to consume alcohol, it should be enjoyed in moderation; we recommend alternating with other beverage options to help you stay hydrated. While alcohol can be part of a healthy diet, excess indulgence can contribute to an overload of sugar and calories, and sap your energy. Or pack your favorite seltzer water for a bubbly refresher you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

3. Incorporate Movement

No matter who you’re spending time with, plan on providing games to add physical activity and fun to your day. Play corn hole while enjoying the cooler temps, take a twilight walk around the neighborhood, or throw around a Frisbee or ball. Building activity into your event creates a healthy environment and keeps the excitement and energy going.

4. Be Prepared

Stick to your usual daily routine prior to your scheduled event. We often alter our typical eating routines because we know we may indulge later in the day, but it’s not only unnecessary, it could be detrimental or have the opposite effect. Have a breakfast meal, regardless of what the rest of the day holds, to maintain your regular eating schedule. It’s important to “break your fast” and fire up your metabolism to keep you satisfied and energized until your next meal.

Berry Breeze Mocktail

Prep: 8 min | Cook: 0 minutes | Total: 8 min
Serves: 1


  • 4 oz. seltzer water
  • ¼ cup raspberries, mashed
  • 1 Tbsp. chia seeds
  • 8 blueberries, fresh or defrosted
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • 1 slice of lemon
  • 6 ice cubes


  1. In small bowl, mix mashed raspberries and chia seeds together; let stand for 5 minutes until chia gels and jam forms.
  2. In cocktail shaker or large glass, combine 2 Tbsp. raspberry-chia jam and blueberries.
  3. Using muddler or the back of a large spoon, muddle together raspberry-chia jam and blueberries until crushed and juices form.
  4. Add lemon juice and ice. Shake or stir vigorously.
  5. Pour into glass with ice, top with seltzer or energy drink. Garnish with slice of lemon.
