Keeping New Year's Resolutions

Resolutions often focus on our internal or external view of ourselves. We may want to lose weight, be better toned, stop biting fingernails and so on. Some changes like a new hair style can be easy to make. Others are not so easy. Simple Truth® can help with making better food choices if a change of eating habits is part of your resolution.

There are literally tons of books about self-help and making changes. My advice is simple: VIEW.

V is for visualize. Find an image of your desired outcome. Then make lots of copies of it. Post it on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, dashboard of your car and other places where you will see it. These visuals will prompt a reminder of your resolution.

I is for “If it is to be, it is up to me.” This is a power-packed sentence of just ten little two-letter words. How basic and true.

E is for encouragement. Employ the support of people around you. Once you vocalize your goal, the commitment level is increased. Other people can help keep you on track. Engage your internal support, too.

W is for making a workable schedule. Break the resolution into smaller, more manageable segments. I would be overwhelmed if I had a goal of losing 30 pounds by July. But, if I said I would like to lose 5 pounds per month, I could tackle that with greater success. Both goals would yield similar results. Smaller benchmarks and timeframes give more opportunities to check progress. They also create more opportunity to celebrate those achievements.
